ery little information remains today concerning Mentuhotep II. His most enduring monument is his unusual terraced funerary complex at Deir el-Bahri. During his reign successful campaigns were launched against several of Egypt's neighbours. He also re-established partial control over Nubia.

c.2040 BCby overthrowing the Herakleopolitan 10th Dynasty, who were rivals to the 11th Dynasty kings. This was the beginning of the period we now call the Middle Kingdom.
